Software Engineer (Java)

Follow software projects from their inception, through the design, prototype and development phases, and into production deployment for Mzinga's hosted Knowledgeplanet Learning Management System (LMS) in a fun, fast-paced, flexible environment.
Mzinga, the leading provider of business social media solutions that drive growth, innovation, and learning, seeks intelligent, hard-working, creative Software Engineers to be a part of their development team. Software Engineers will utilize multiple skills and competencies in the database design, software design, and production deployment phases of software engineering. Software Engineers report to the Development Manager and work under the direction and lead of Software Architects and Senior Engineers. New hires are assigned a mentoring Senior Engineer for their first 6 months to provide assistance and support.
Primary Responsibilities
- Documentation/definition of functional requirements and system design
- Develop and unit test components
- Develop code following Mzinga's coding conventions and documentation standards
- Correct issues found in testing or the implementation of features
- Respond to research issues/tickets, as escalated by the Support Team
- Participate in the development of customer-driven enhancement features
- Perform normal administrative functions associated with a professional position, such as time reporting, project status reporting, and the like
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by management
Education/Experience/Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field from an accredited college or university, or comparable related work experience and/or training
- Strong self-directed learner with an ability and desire to solve problems and acquire new skills in a fast-paced work environment
- Technical skill requirements: Java/JSP, SQL, HTML/CSS/Javascript, XSL, XML
- Additional preferable experience/skills: Oracle, Unix/Linux, Actuate (reporting tools), web design, software design patterns, UML, Apache, EXT JS / AJAX
- Ability to work with a technical lead
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills
- Attention to detail
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to work both independently and as a productive and helpful team member
