My Wife Was Right
I remember the day vividly. It was February 1997, and I was visiting with a famous literary team, proposing the title for my new (and first) business book. My thought was simple: I want to title it My Wife is Right. The people in the room -- ghost writers and agents for such luminaries as Jack Welch, Tom Peters, Faith Popcorn and others -- asked me, "Right about what?" "Everything," I answered, "and I don't mean just at home, but also in business." They asked me if she was a business professional and if she went to business school, and I answered no on both accounts, but I assured them that "she is right nonetheless." When they asked me how I know she is right, I told them this:
"In a world that has long since transitioned from the industrial age to the information age, we are about to see an equally profound change in business -- both form and structure -- from an age of command and control to one of sharing and collaborating. More importantly, this new age of sharing, will be led by new types of people -- individuals who care about others, more than they do themselves; who care about collaborating more than competing; who want to serve rather than be served; and who understand how to moderate and facilitate, not just direct and control. A world that my wife, who is a Dean of Students at Harvard's Dental School understands more than any other leader I know."

Their answer was simple: business is not ready to read a book about "My Wife is Right" -- about business or anything else. Business readers only care about winning, executing, competing -- not sharing, collaborating or communicating. So the book was retitled, Cracking the Value Code -- a far cry from what I wanted, but something I was prepared to accept. Well, the times have surely changed in the past 9 years -- all to the better; and my wife was right. The Face Book, Flickr, MySpaces, etc. have proven her right beyond anything I could have ever imagined. And I am glad to be part of the movement, even if I am a bit late to this sharing revolution party. But here we are, and it's time for all of to get on-board because you never know what will come out of all this sharing, collaborating and communicating. - Barry 4/16/06
