Social Media Minute (6/4/08) I just had a hallway conversation with a colleague and she was really intrigued by an article I mentioned in passing. She suggested I pull together a post on the subject (Clay Shirky's new book "Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing without Organizations"). While that might be interesting to some, instead I decided to write a weekly summary of what I think are notable and important articles and insights.
Why the name? I hope it takes you less than one minute to find something that interests you in here. It will take longer for you to dig deeper, but in the end you should be able to quickly scan the post and see if you want to dig deeper. Keep me on my toes... if you're wallowing in here for five minutes or more, call me out. I'll change the name to Social Media Five Minutes. Thanks for reading.
- Wisdom on Crowds: What CEOs Need to Know About the Social Web - This quick interview on the WSJ with Clay Shirky describes why CEOs should pay attention to social media and cites some great examples of how it's helping companies. He suggests Flickr as a great way to intro your CEO to the power of social media and closes with a suggestion on how to manage all that email.
- Modeling the Hockey Stick - In this post, Rachel Happe (IDC analyst) explores what it takes to get to mass community adoption (the hockey stick). The post includes an incredibly insightful comment from yours truly on what it takes to get there. ;-)
- The Flip Video Camera - If you run a community and haven't yet found the Flip, you need to check it out. It's easy to use, really portable and captures web-ready video for your community. I've been using it to conduct interviews to share with our customers and find it really breaks through the hassle of working with video.
- A Journey in Social Media - Chuck Hollis authors this blog on what he's seen/learned along the way in developing community for EMC. While Chuck's not a Mzinga customer, I love his insights into what it takes to get IT buy-in to community, going live and building/sustaining community (pretty much every post to a certain degree).
- Celtics vs. Lakers: A Matchup for the Ages - It seems appropriate to include an article about the soon-to-be-starting NBA Finals and this article by Frank Deford fits the bill. The fact that Tom from Catalyze is a Lakers fan (and therefore demanding a friendly wager on the outcome) is just icing on the cake.
Let me know what you think. Until next week...

Jim, the next 2 weeks (or so) of Lakers-Celtics rivalry action should be great fun. How about using your Flip Video and taking a movie of you and Isaac trying on your new Lakers caps? I love action shots with my Social Media...Tom Humbarger, Community Manager for Catalyze

Thanks Jim, this is a great combination of "what's new" and "refresher" for me. Go Celtics! -- Heather Strout
